Come and try the first canoe trail on the Trinity Broads
Press launch
Friday, 11 April 2008
Guided canoe trails are to be run on the secluded Trinity Broads, near Great Yarmouth, for the first time – and representatives from the media are invited to sample the first two on Thursday April 10th .
The trails will explore the wildlife havens of the five Trinity Broads –Ormesby, Rollesby, Lily, Ormesby Little and Filby – which are peaceful and tranquil because they are isolated from the main river system. Only electric engines, rowing boats and sailing boats are permitted, and public launching of canoes is not allowed.
Because canoeing is silent and low in the water it is the perfect way to get close to the rare, and sometimes shy wildlife of the Broads. The Trinity Broads, which are a SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) and a Broads Special Area of Conservation(SAC) are home to many species of wildlife including otters, bitterns and marsh harriers. Tufted duck, shoveller, gadwall and pochard over winter there. When the water is clear shoals of fish and stands of thriving water plants can be seen.
The canoe trails will be run in stable, Canadian canoes, by TheCanoeMan.com - Mark Wilkinson, in conjunction with the Broads Authority.
Eight trails will be held from May to October and will include one rare opportunity to explore Lily Broad in July and to canoe the length of the Muckfleet from Stokesby sluice in August and September.
To raise awareness of this opportunity TheCanoeMan.com and the Broads Authority are holding an open day for the press on Thursday 10th April. Two hour canoe trails will be running at 11 am and 2pm.
The dates for the 2008 canoe trails on the Trinity Broads are shown below. Trip times are 1.00 pm – 3.00 pm, and 3.30 pm - 5.30 pm (with a few exceptions).
